A soldier from Keller, TX died Sunday in Kandahar, Afghanistan from wounds he suffered when his unit was attacked with an improvised explosive device, according officials with the Department of Defense.
Staff Sgt. Alex Anthony Viola, 29, and his unit were on dismounted patrol when they were attacked.
Viola, who is survived by his parents and sister, was assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Eglin Air Force Base, FL. He was on his first military deployment.
Viola joined the Army in June 2009. Until April 2010, he was an engineer sergeant assigned to the 1st Battalion, 19th Special Forces Group (Airborne) before he began Special Forces training in Ft. Bragg, NC.
In June 2011, he graduated from Special Forces Qualification Course, and was then assigned to 1st Bn., 19th SFG (A), Camp Williams, Utah.
In March 2013, Viola was assigned to his FL base before deploying.
Viola earned many awards and decorations during his time in the military.
