Flower Mound officer calls disappearance a misunderstanding

Posted: Updated:
FLOWER MOUND, Texas -

The Flower Mound police officer reported missing this past weekend said his disappearance was all a misunderstanding.

Sgt. Jeremy Varnell family said he disappeared after finishing the Rock and Roll Marathon in San Antonio on Sunday.

Flower Mound Police Department Chief Andy Kancel said he was found in Lantana, Fla. early Wednesday morning.

Officers there were running plates outside a hotel. Varnell's plate came back with a missing person's report. The officers knocked on the hotel room door and Varnell came out and identified himself, Kancel said.

A report from Lantana Police Department states Varnell told officers he left Texas because he was not happy and wanted to start over with a new life. He was at the hotel with a man he met online.

Varnell's attorney called it a misunderstanding. He said Varnell was taking time away to reflect on private and personal issues.

Sgt. Varnell has been in law enforcement for 22 years and has been with the FMPD for 19 years. He has not yet returned to work.

"We are extremely grateful and relieved he is OK and not in danger. We are very thankful or the San Antonio Police Department's hard work on this case. At this point, the situation is now a personnel matter and will be handled internally," FMPD said in a statement.
