Ariz. decertifies Green Party for low numbers

Posted: Updated:

PHOENIX (AP) - The Green Party has lost its automatic spot on Arizona ballots because it doesn't have enough registered party members and also didn't have enough members vote in last year's presidential election.

The announcement by Secretary of State Ken Bennett Wednesday means only four parties are guaranteed ballot slots next year: Democrats, Republicans, Libertarians and the Americans Elect party.

The Green Party office needed nearly 21,500 people to vote in the primary last year but fell far short. The party also failed to meet a threshold of 2/3 of a percent of all state registered voters.

The party can return to the ballot if members turn in more than 23,000 valid signatures by the end of next February.
