NEW YORK (AP) -

Three men have been convicted of fraud and other charges in New York City for their roles in a scandal-plagued automated payroll technology project called CityTime.

Prosecutors say Mark Mazer, Gerard Denault and Dimitry Aronshtein were convicted Friday after a six-week trial before U.S. District Judge Judge George B. Daniels in Manhattan federal court.

The guilty verdicts brings to eight the total number of people convicted in the corruption case. Prosecutors say two others remain fugitives. Last March, technology giant SAIC Inc. paid more than $500 million in restitution and penalties to avoid prosecution.

The project began as a $63 million attempt to automate employee timekeeping. Prosecutors say it ballooned tenfold into what authorities say was an epic fraud involving kickbacks, systemic overbilling and an international money laundering conspiracy.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
