CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

The creators of hit FOX show "Family Guy" are catching some major fire from fans for a very interesting plot choice. They killed off one of its most-loved main characters – Brian Griffin.

Stewie's partner-in-crime, the wise-cracking, martini-loving dog Brian died in Sunday night's episode. He talked and drank his way into fans' hearts, often debating politics and religion. Fans were still outraged over the dogs unexpected death, 48 hours later.

Shocked fans have flooded social media with protests. A Facebook page called "RIP Brian Griffin" racked up 120,000 likes in less than 24 hours. By TUesday morning, #RIPBrian, #RIPBrianGriffin and #BringBackBrian were still trending on Twitter. Fans have even created a Change.org petition.

Brian had been central character in the show since it first went on the air in 1999. TMZ reports Brian's replacement, Vinnie the dog, has already voiced over six episodes.
