Store clerk accused of fatally shooting would-be shoplifter

Posted: Updated:

A store clerk is accused of fatally shooting a man who was trying to shoplift Tuesday, according to officials with the Arlington Police Department.

Johnathan Brian Lambert, 28, of River Oaks, remains in the Arlington City Jail on a murder charge. A bail amount hasn't been set.

The shooting took place at the Smokin Dragon Gifts store in the 5900 block of S. Cooper Street shortly before 11 a.m. Lambert is accused of shooting the victim as he was trying to flee the store.

The victim, whose name hasn't yet been released, was taken to Medical Center of Arlington, where he later died.

A friend of the victim was in the parking lot during the shooting and was reportedly confronted by the armed store clerks.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers saw two men holding two other men at gunpoint.

Police say they believe that the clerks were the only ones with guns at the time, and that only Lambert fired his. They also believe that he fired without a direct threat to himself, other employees or customers.

Detectives are continuing to investigate.
