Grenade temporarily evacuates Tinley Park police station

Posted: Updated:
TINLEY PARK, Ill. (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A southwest suburban police station was temporarily evacuated last week after a woman dropped off a grenade her son had discovered, police said.

The boy found the vintage hand grenade in his grandparent's front yard last week, and gave it to his mother, according to Tinley Park police.

The woman brought the grenade to the police station last Thursday, police said. Police contacted the Cook County Bomb Squad, who determined the grenade was authentic and had been activated, but was inert.

Police do not know where the grenade came from, but believe from its "weathered, old and muddy" appearance that it had been in the yard for a long time.

The police station was evacuated about an hour for the investigation.
