CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A single dad from Chicago plans to pay off his parents' mortgage after he won $1.3 million from a scratch-off lottery ticket.

Okpara Smith, 30, bought the $2,500 a Week for Life lottery ticket at a BP gas station while running errands, the Illinois Lottery said in a release.

He scratched the ticket in his car, and rushed straight to the lottery prize center after he realized he won, the release said.

"When they confirmed I won, all I could think of was that now I would be able to pay off my parents' mortgage. My dad is retired and they could really use my help," Smith said in the release.

Smith, a single dad, also plans to buy a larger house and invest for three daughters, the release said. He chose to take the prize's cash option, and will receive $1,358,000 after withholding.

The gas station, at 6350 W. Montrose Ave., will receive a $19,400 payout for selling the winning ticket.
