4 teens injured in Burleson explosion

Posted: Updated:

A Wednesday explosion involving gasoline in a Burleson neighborhood has left four teens injured after they were reportedly playing with fire.

The incident occurred at a residence in the 400 block of SE Gardens Blvd. The victims are all boys, and include two 13-year-olds and a 17 and 18-year-old.

The-18-year old was identified by friends as Shawn Dean. One of the 13-year-olds is Cameron Russell, and the 17-year-old is his brother, Nick Russell.

Dean was critically injured, and he and one of the 13-year-olds were taken by air ambulance to Parkland Hospital in Dallas. The other two were taken to the hospital by ground ambulance with non-life-threatening injuries.

The fire reportedly happened at the brothers' home when their father was at work.

Burleson's fire marshal says the boys were in the in the backyard of the house, where they apparently had a fire going on the ground and then decided to pour gasoline on it.

"They were pouring gas on the ground, then they went to pour some more gas on the ground and then it flashed back on them," said Burleson Fire Marshal Stacy Singleton.

Singleton says Dean was the one who poured the gasoline on the flames.

"I'm just in shock, I guess," said Donna Russell, aunt of Cameron and Nick. She fought back tears after learning that two of her nephews were badly burned after playing with fire.

"They shouldn't have been doing it, but I mean, yeah, boys being boys I guess," she said.

Singleton said the incident has already made its mark on the teens.

"I talked to one of the kids," said Singleton. "He said, ‘We learned a lesson.'"
