Judge rules against sheriff in discrimination case

Posted: Updated:

COLUMBUS, Ga. (AP) - A federal judge has ordered a western Georgia sheriff to promote a woman who accused him of discrimination.

The Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus reported Wednesday that U.S. District Court Judge Clay Land ordered Muscogee County Sheriff John Darr to promote Lt. Donna Tompkins.

Tompkins and a second female lieutenant have said that Darr snubbed them for promotions in 2010 and promoted a man they felt was less qualified to serve as captain.

Aside from Tompkins' promotion, Land has ordered the City of Columbus to pay about $270,000 in attorney's fees and expenses.

City Attorney Clifton Fay says city officials and Darr are reviewing the court decision.
