CHICAGO (Sun-Times Media Wire) -

A man was shot and wounded early Thursday during a domestic dispute in the South Shore neighborhood on the South Side.

The man, 43, was in an argument with his 57-year-old girlfriend in the 7800 block of South Cregier Avenue about 12:55 a.m. when he began to hit her with his fists, police said. He then grabbed a gun and threatened to shoot her.

They began to struggle over the gun, and it discharged and hit the man in the ear, police said.

The man was treated and released from John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County, then he was taken into police custody. Charges against him are pending, police said.

The woman suffered injuries during the struggle and was in "stable" condition at Jackson Park Hospital, police said.

Police said a handgun was recovered after the incident.

Area South detectives are investigating.
