Angel Tree giving gifts to children of incarcerated parents

(WJBK) -

The Angel Tree project makes sure every child will have a Merry Christmas, even if their parents are behind bars.

Ora Williams is the coordinator of Fellowship Chapel's Angel Tree Project. She has ministered for the past six years to men and women who are incarcerated, and given them a chance to make sure their kids aren't forgotten at Christmas.

Parents sign up to be a sponsor and Williams matches them with a child/children

"The minimum requirements are a clothing gift and a toy and fun gift," she explains. Each gift also comes with a handwritten note from their mom or dad.

Kenneth Napier spent four and a half years behind bars and his children received holiday gifts from Angel Tree. Now that he's home and holding down a steady job he wants to give that same gift to a family like his. "When I would call home the day after Christmas and ask them how was their gift, 'Oh daddy! You sent us this! And we were so happy to get it and it was a blessing.'"

"It matters because we need to keep that connection between parents and child. We need to keep our family in tact," Williams says.

"It's not the children's fault," Napier says, holding back tears. "The gifts are wonderful, and the children actually think the parent is sending the gift so it's a blessing. It's a real blessing."

200 children are on the list this year for the Angel Tree Project. Williams still needs sponsors for 50 of those kids.
