The Michigan Black Friday protest drew union leaders and others. As many as 1,500 other similar protests were planned across the country.

The retailer has been a target of protests for opening stores on Thanksgiving Day. Black Friday demonstrators were demanding a minimum salary of $25,000 for Wal-Mart workers, more full-time jobs and an end to what they call illegal retaliation against workers who've been speaking out. The company employs more than 31,000 people in Michigan and 1.3 million nationwide. They say the average hourly wage for Michigan workers is $12.88. A spokesperson says the company plans to add 300 more jobs at a new store in Warren. A hiring center will open at 14 Mile and VanDyke on Monday, Dec. 2.

Wal-Mart officials say the company has received good feedback from employees about working the holiday. The discounter says they get additional holiday pay and other perks for working Thanksgiving.
