Escaped Tarrant County murder suspect takes own life

Posted: Updated:

The search for escaped murder suspect David Matthew Merrill ended Friday at a motel in Euless.

Tarrant County Sheriff spokesman Terry Grisham says Euless police developed information that Merrill was at the motel. When officers arrived they found Merrill with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Merrill died at JPS hospital in Fort Worth Saturday morning according to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner's Office. Euless police are conducting the investigation into the shooting incident.

Merrill escaped from a downtown Fort Worth probation office earlier in the week.  Merrill's bond was revoked after he failed a drug test.  He disappeared from the office triggering an area wide manhunt.

Merrill is accused of the September 2012 murder of his father-in-law, rockabilly singer Rudy Mata.  Mata was found with multiple gunshot wounds at his apartment in Arlington.
