Fire Kills Woman, Injures Husband In Strawberry Mansion

Posted: Updated:

A house fire claimed the life of a woman and injured her husband Tuesday morning in the Strawberry Mansion section of Philadelphia.

Investigators found six smoke detectors in the rubble of the fire, but none were working.

The fire was extinguished in minutes, but not fast enough to save a 94-year-old woman inside.

Neighbors told us Martha Frasier had lived on this block for decades. She was described as a good person with a good heart whose story a tragedy was waiting to happen.

Anita English, her nurse told us Frasier's gas had been shut off months ago. PGW would not confirm the status of the account but fire officials say a space heater was found in the second floor bedroom where the blaze began.

"This home had about six smoke alarms." Two of those smoke alarms were actually installed. None of them were in working condition. So either the batteries were dead or the batteries were missing." Deputy Fire Commissioner Derrick Sawyer said.

"I'm just hurt. She had to live like that! 94-years-old in the city of Philadelphia and nobody could help her," English said.

Frasier's 86-year-old companion escaped the fire. He was hospitalized with smoke inhalation.

The home had no fewer than six smoke alarms, but officials say none were working.

Neighbors tell us the 94-year-old Frasier was in frail health all but blind. Shirley Travis remembered talking with her just 24 hours earlier.

"I said, 'Miss Martha, they have homes with independent living because you shouldn't be living by yourself like this. She said, 'I want to die right here in this house," Travis said.

"It's tragic, man but she's all right. She's in good heaven, you know? God bless her, "Neighbor Duke Marrow said.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the fire.
