The University of New Haven in Connecticut said a suspect is in custody following a report of a man near campus with what appeared to be a rifle. The university, which despite its name is located in West Haven, said Tuesday on Twitter and Facebook that the lockdown has been lifted.

"THE LOCKDOWN HAS BEEN LIFTED. Police has completed search and it is now safe to move about campus. Thank you for your cooperation," according to a message on the university's Facebook page. Earlier, officials told students and faculty to "shelter in place" as police searched the campus.

The university, which enrolls about 6,400 students, canceled afternoon classes. The majority of its 4,600 undergraduates live in university housing.

Several nearby public schools also put out shelter-in-place orders as a precaution.

Last week, Yale University in neighboring New Haven was locked down for six hours after a man called police and said somebody was coming to shoot up the campus.
