Fight Breaks Out At Philly Tree Lighting Ceremony

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Our tree lighting ceremony in Philadelphia – the "City of Brother Love" – was Wednesday night. It's usually a time for the community to come together in the spirit of Christmas...

Instead, an all-out brawl broke out, and it happened live on our air!

Anchor Kerry Barrett was speaking over a shot of the crowd before the lighting when the fight happened.

"The Center City Tree Lighting Ceremony and a – this is not good. This is not that. Holy cow! This is that, but there's a fight breaking out!" Barrett said.

Witnesses say the fight broke out when someone bumped into a woman in the crowd.

That's when people started throwing punches. At least five or six people were involved. You can see one of the men involved is actually holding a child! He's there on the left, in the black sweater.

Another man, eyewitness Chris Bogan, who was wearing the Denver Broncos hat, tried to break up the fight.

"She was like, 'Don't bump my daughter.' And then she threw a Pepsi on her, then they started fighting," Bogan said. "There were kids around. A father had his daughter, I had a child around me. I just didn't want anyone to get hurt on a good day."

Police say no one was hurt, and Thursday morning there were no arrests. However, several people were taken in for questioning.

This all happened in front of city dignitaries, including Mayor Michael Nutter.

The rest of the holiday celebrations went on, as scheduled.

We have more video of the fight in the video clips above.
