Mother of woman who died after plunging into lake wishes bridge had been closed

Posted: Updated:

A 21-year-old woman was on her way to work Saturday when she went off the Lewisville Lake Bridge and plunged into the icy lake. Now, Kayla Gawalek's mother says she wishes the bridge had been closed that morning.

Gawalek was driving from Lewisville to Denton around 4 a.m., headed to her job at a manufacturing plant. She hit some ice, spun out of control, went off the bridge and into the lake.

Emergency crews, including divers, worked for hours to pull the truck out. The lake was about 50 degrees that morning.

Gawalek's mother learned the news while in Laredo and was frantically trying to get back, but the airports were closed. When she finally arrived in Lewisville, she couldn't believe the icy bridge where her daughter was killed was even open.

"I wish the city or Lewisville or Denton or whoever is in charge would have closed the bridge or all the bridges, and not permitted anyone to go out," said Gawalek's mother, Isabel.

Gawalek's family is devastated.

"It hurts too much," said Isabel. "I won't be able to see her anymore…just have that memory of her smile."
