Chris O'Connell Reports From Blue Route

Posted: Updated:

The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for parts of the viewing area that is in effect to midnight.

Heavy snow is expected, and travel is strongly discouraged, the warning says.

It's posted for Philadelphia, Chester and Delaware counties in Pennsylvania, New Castle County in Delaware, as well as Burlington, Camden, Gloucester, Ocean and Salem counties in New Jersey.

Other areas to the north and south remain under a Winter Weather Advisory.

The NWS warning is for snow and sleet accumulations of 3 to 6 inches, along with some freezing rain. Ice accumulations will be around a trace.

Snow moved in around noon and was overspreading the area by early afternoon. It will mix with sleet during the evening from southeast to northwest, then change to rain during the overnight.

There should some freezing rain for a brief time during the transition period this evening.

Slippery travel will develop on untreated roadways. Bridges and other elevated surfaces tend to ice up first, and visibilities could drop below a half mile at times.

Temperatures are in the upper 20s to around 30 degrees.

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet and ice are expected or occurring. Strong winds are also possible. This will make travel very hazardous or impossible.

Warm air mixes in later from the south and gradual changes the precipitation through the evening from snow to a mix and then to rain.

So, whatever falls will eventually be washed away by that rain. And the whole system will pull out early Monday morning, giving way to some lingering showers.

"The higher up you go, the further north and west you go, the better chance for the snow to last longer," Roth said.

Our high temperature in the city Sunday will be 34, resulting in that mix of snow and rain.

Then, we should see the rain on Monday, possible snow lingering Tuesday before we're just plain old cold towards the end of next week.
