Senators demand stricter safety measures for Metro-North

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

The many commuter trains coming in and going out of Grand Central Station will have some new security equipment if two US Senators have their way.

Senator Chuck Schumer and Richard Blumenthal say the time for Metro North to get on board with these safety measures is long overdue.

The December 1st Metro-North train derailment that took 4 lives and injured dozens of passengers could have been prevented if the train had been equipped with an audio & video monitoring system, says Senator Schumer.

Schumer was joined by Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal over the weekend as they explained the urgent need to do a safety overhaul and prevent another tragedy.

The outside camera would monitor track conditions and the interior one would be able to detect irregular behavior by crew members that could endanger passengers.

The NTSB found the train was going 82 miles per hour around a curve when it derailed and that there was no mechanical or track failure.

The recommended speed for the curve is 30 mph.

They believe operator error is to blame.

“Every operator should be better trained,” Blumenthal said. “The train was going too fast"

In the meantime, The Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced on Sunday that the Metro-North is making immediate improvements to reinforce safety at critical curves and movable bridges along the railroad's right-of-way.

These improvements were directed on Friday by Governor Andrew Cuomo in a letter to the MTA and by the Federal Railroad Administration in its Emergency Order.

Signal crews have installed new protections at the Spuyten Duyvil curve, the site of last week's fatal derailment, which will warn train engineers of the approaching speed reduction and will automatically apply the train's emergency brakes if speed is not lowered to the 30 mph maximum in the curve.
