Astor estate donates $9M for education programs

Posted: Updated:

NEW YORK (AP) - A fund created with assets from philanthropist Brooke Astor's estate has awarded $9.2 million in grants to New York-based organizations for education and literacy programs.

The charitable donations were awarded by the New York Community Trust six years after Astor's death.

The Wall Street Journal reports that about $7 million will be shared by 15 charities favored by Astor. Among them is the Wildlife Conservation Society.

Some $2 million will be distributed among six charities to support nonprofit programs that improve reading skills among disadvantaged grade school students. Of that money, $586,000 is going to the Reading Excellence and Discovery Foundation for a program at three schools in the Bronx.

The grants come from the trust's $43 million Brooke Astor Funds for New York City Education.

It appears the subway bedbug problem we've been reporting is getting worse. Commuters already have to contend with sweltering platforms, scurrying rats and packed train cars, and now there's another transit woe: fear of bedbugs.
