Gone are the days of bundling up before you leave the house. Today's outdoor gear is lighter, warmer, and easier to put on, especially workout clothes. Self magazine's Marissa Stephenson weighs in on the hot new designs.
"Going outside in the winter is bad enough, you're already cold, you don't really want to be out there," Marissa says. "You can have thin really comfortable flattering clothes you'll be that much more likely to work out."
She says her favorite piece is the Nike Aeroloft vest.
"It's 800 filled down, but it's super super thin it's like a quarter of an inch thick and it fits really well, I can wear it over a base layer," she says.
Here's how it works: movement activates ventilation in the vest, allowing heat to escape the body through laser-cut holes between the patches of down. The result?
"I just wore it last week for a run, it was about 35 degrees and I didn't feel cold at all," Marissa says.
But Nike is not the only company cashing in on the trend. Uniqlo has also released Heattech, a line of warm weather workout gear, dresses and even corduroys. Uniqlo says Heattech is smooth and light weight.
Reebok is also jumping on the bandwagon with its Zig Tech jacket, made from textured lightweight outer fibers woven through the body lining.
"You don't have to be in heavy, clunky clothes or down jackets and you're going to feel better about yourself when you're out there running," Marissa says.
And running in these temperatures, lighter lets you go longer.
