Temple University Makes Drastic Cuts To Sports Programs

Posted: Updated:
NORTH PHILADELPHIA -

Temple Students were hoping for a change of heart, now they're heartbroken after the university refuses to back off drastic cuts to its sports programs.

FOX 29's Thalia Perez was at today's board meeting. She joins us live on campus where students say they won't give up.

Lily Papalo says she was holding out hope today that school officials would reverse their decision to eliminate a third of varsity sports programs, but instead at today's board of trustee's meeting,

"I just want to know why they just approved borrowing three million dollars when we just saved 3-million by cutting all of our teams," Papalo said. "It's only been a couple of days. But, it feels like forever. And I don't know what I'm going to do."

Temple University President Neil Theobald expressed his sincere regret and laid out the options for student athletes to consider whose teams are being cut.

Extra chairs were set up to accommodate the startling number of student athletes who showed up for today's meeting. They listened showing little emotion as Theobald addressed the sport's cuts for about 5-minutes by reading a written statement.

"Our student athletes and coaches are the casualties of Temple University's overreach in trying to operate an athletic program beyond its facilities and resources," Theobald said.

But President Theobald's words were of no comfort to students who say they want answers.

"There are a lot of questions I know from me and my fellow student athletes that haven't been addressed at all. For us this meeting was pretty much a waste of time," Baseball Player Adam Dian said.

And even students who tried to confront school officials with questions were dismissed.

"We wanna know what it's going to take because there are people here that are willing to go the extra mile," Baseball Player Derek Peterson said.
