Real-Life 'Anchorman' Once Anchored In Philadelphia

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

The creators of Anchorman have revealed that the inspiration for the legendary character, Ron Burgundy, is veteran broadcaster Mort Crim.

In an interview with USA Today, Mort was asked how much truth there was in the Anchorman movie. He replied that any good parody takes a grain of truth and exaggerates it.

He said he's not offended at all by the film.

Mort also talked about women in the newsroom. It wasn't until 1974 in Philadelphia that Mort worked with his first female anchor, Jessica Savitch, at KYW-TV.

"I was a typical traditional 1972 male chauvinist anchor," Crim said in a documentary.

Mort said that until then, the only women in the newsroom were secretaries.

Mort is set to meet "Ron Burgundy" during the premiere of Anchorman 2.
