Dallas council members approved a measure Wednesday that would call for a 1,500 ft. setback between any gas drilling wells and homes, businesses and churches.
The move came after years of public comment and questioning about what rules would apply to natural gas drilling in the city.
The council heard a final round of public comments on Wednesday before approving the ordinance in a 9-6 vote.
Environmentalists and some Dallas residents in attendance were thrilled with the move. Opponents of the measure say the ordinance will virtually shut down any drilling in Dallas.
