Stolen dog returned home to Fort Worth family

Posted: Updated:

A dog stolen from a Fort Worth couple's home during the ice storm, whose disappearance set off a firestorm of controversy on the internet, is back home.

Heidi's owners, the Gupton family, were reunited with their dog Thursday night.

The ordeal started Friday, when someone broke the lock on their dog run while they weren't home.

The couple and friends posted flyers online, and the Guptons were shocked to find a nasty response on Reddit from the person who claimed they took the dog because that person was afraid she was being neglected.

The Guptons say Reddit users arranged to return Heidi at a Fort Worth shopping center.

Fort Worth police are still investigating.

A person who claimed he took Heidi called FOX 4 Wednesday night, but refused to give his name or go on camera and even blocked his phone number.

He said he was concerned for the dog's safety in the cold, and that he always meant to return Heidi to her owners.

Heidi is a Greater Swiss mountain dog, a breed that's used to cold temperatures.
