Philly Officer Shoots At Carjacker After Chase

Posted: Updated:

Philadelphia police say a carjacking suspect is in custody after an officer shot at the man when he reached toward his waist instead of surrendering.

Police have yet to release the name of the suspect arrested early Friday

Police say the incident began when the suspect assaulted a 56-year-old man who was pumping gas into his car about 11 p.m. Thursday. The suspect hit the man in the head with a gun then drove off in the victim's brand-new Kia Sorrento.

Police spotted the suspect a couple hours later and gave chase, which ended when the suspect crashed into a parked car around 55th and Springfield.

Police say the officer shot at the suspect, but didn't hit him, when the man reached for his waist. There is yet no weapon recovered on scene. Authorities are investigating the firing of shots by the officer.

Officers aren't identifying the victim of the carjacking, who needed eight stitches in his head.

FOX 29's Dawn Timmeney is on scene and will continue providing information as it comes.
