Winter Storm Watches Up For Saturday's Storm

Posted: Updated:
PHILADELPHIA -

Winter Storm Watches are in effect for counties north and west of Philadelphia as another storm heads our way.

The watch is for Saturday morning until late Saturday night. It's posted for Berks, Carbon, Chester, Lancaster, Lehigh and Monroe counties along with parts of Montgomery and Bucks counties.

Those are the area where we expect most of the accumulation.

FOX 29's Sue Serio says travel will be tricky Saturday, and the different types of precipitation make for the toughest part of the forecast.

It will start off as snow because we have a cold front up to our north, reinforcing the cold air already here.

Then we will keep an eye on the low-pressure system heading toward the Northeast that will transfer some energy to the coast. And it will all move northward.

Here's what we expect:

By 9 a.m., we are seeing snow moving into the area.

By noon, it is snowing in a lot of places, but we expect it to be a rain event at the Jersey Shore and Delaware beaches.

Now we have to watch that rain-snow line moving northward during the late afternoon and evening.

And this is where it gets tricky as to what type of precipitation we get and when. Eventually it will change over to rain just before it exits, and by 8 a.m. Sunday that storm is gone and we are looking at just dry conditions for the rest of the time.

So, we're expecting 1 to 3 inches of accumulation on Saturday in Philadelphia, 3 to 6 north and west, and even more in the Poconos, with less to the south of us.

The National Weather Service says accumulations of 6 inches or more are possible over all of Central Pennsylvania with amounts possibly exceeding 8 inches over the central and eastern mountains. A coating of ice may occur to the south of the Pennsylvania Turnpike and Interstate 81.

It will be a wintry mix at the Army-Navy game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field.

By Sunday, we're up to 37 degrees. Another blast of cold air arrives on Monday, we will moderate a little bit on Tuesday and Wednesday from the upper 30s to around 40 – still colder than average, but at least it will be dry.
