President Obama and First Lady Michelle shared a moment of silence at the White House, lighting 26 candles, one for each of the victims.

Residents of Newtown, Connecticut mourned privately.

Local churches held memorial services, and the names of the victims were read over a loud speaker.

And flags flew at half-staff.

President Obama paid tribute to the tragedy in his weekly radio address.

Local officials had announced there wouldn't be a major remembrance event.

The media was asked to keep away, out of respect for the victims' families.

Massachusetts political leaders also paid tribute to those killed in the massacre.

U.S. Rep. Niki Tsongas said on Saturday that the thoughts and prayers of Massachusetts are with the Newtown families as the nation continues to come to grips with the tragedy.

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino lamented the killing of 20 children and six educators by a troubled man who then took his own life.

Menino says he is outraged the tragedy has failed to push political leaders in Washington, DC, to introduce 'common sense reform' to gun laws.

Menino says national elected officials should work behalf of the people they are supposed to serve and that the time to take the loopholes out of gun laws and automatic weapons out of neighborhoods has long since passed.
