Tarrant County prosecutors said Monday they cannot appeal the probation sentence given to a 16-year-old convicted of killing four people in a drunken driving crash.
Tarrant County Juvenile Judge Jean Boyd sentenced Ethan Couch to ten years of probation in a California rehab facility last week, igniting a furor locally and across the United States.
Couch was driving drunk on Father's Day weekend this year at three times the legal limit for an adult and slammed into four people outside Burleson.
Tarrant County District Attorney spokesman Melody McDonald said even though prosecutors are frustrated, they could not find any roads to an appeal or a way to a stiffer sentence.
McDonald said the district attorney's office is talking with at least one lawmaker about tightening loopholes in the juvenile law for future cases.
Five civil cases remain pending against the Couch family.
