PennDOT Prepares Roads For 4th Storm This Year

Posted: Updated:

"You look at the storm for Tuesday, there's going to be some things we have to keep a good eye on and that is the temperature," said Nick Martino with PennDOT. Temperatures in the 20's mean a different plan of attack than for last Saturday's storm.

"When you have that,  the cold weather and the snow that is going to be coming down,  that is going to stick right away," Martino predicted. The other difference is the last storm didn't fall on a week day with rush hour traffic in full effect. PennDOT spent Monday brining the roads and crews will head out at one in the morning to continue the operation.

"We have to make sure we get a lot of salt down because the traffic is going to pick up as you get into that early rush hour around four a.m. time," he said.

On the eve of the what will be the fourth snow storm already this year, we found people out enjoying winter by the fire pit at the RiverRink on Penns Landing. Traffic here is welcome on the ice and snow.

Matt Mokam is Assistant Manager at the Blue Cross RiverRink and said, "The only troublesome part is when it is a blizzard type of storm. We have to battle with removing snow from the ice and sometimes we end closing early."

Jason Chen who was out enjoying the RiverRink said he's glad Saturday's storm is over.

"It was really bad," recalled Chen. Still he's actually looking forward to Tuesday's snow since he won't have to deal with the roads.

"I'm actually kind of excited. I have the day off from work."

PennDot said 325 trucks will hit roads in the region in the morning. At least 100 more are on standby.
