St. Paul hit-and-run victim reconnects with friends at benefit

OAKDALE, Minn. (KMSP) -

A Monday night benefit for hit-and-run victim Wade Souster brought friends and family to Oakdale, Minn. to help aid and celebrate his recovery.

About 200 people came to let Souster know he's not alone.

"It's actually quite nice to get out and see people I haven't seen for a while that really don't make it out to the hospital to see me," he said.

This is the first time he's been well enough to speak to Fox 9 since he was hit while walking home from a friend's going away party near Lake Phalen on Oct. 3. He suffered a head injury, broken leg and is now permanently blind in his left eye. He still doesn't know who hit him as police have yet to make any arrests.

On Monday, friends, family and coworkers at the Downtowner car wash in St. Paul held a benefit concert with musicians from The Journey Experience, Santana and Lynyrd Skynyrd to raise money for his medical bills.

Now, Souster is looking forward to getting back to work and returning to two of his favorite hobbies, hunting and fishing. His doctors gave him clearance this week to start putting weight on his leg again, and soon, he'll be able to begin rehab so he can begin to walk again.
