Aging Hand Treatment Growing For Women

Posted: Updated:

We have mastered the art of camouflage pretty much all over except when it comes to our hands .Even younger women complain. They're not alone.

Nicole Ciasullo and Julie Koehler are among growing numbers of women whose hands are aging faster than their faces.

"I feel like my hands are what really ages me the most," Julie said.

"My veins are very visible, the skin is very thin," Nicole said.

"The hand skin is very thin and very sensitive and we tend to abuse it a lot," Dr. Ivona Perec said.

Sun spots, dry and wrinkly, over-washed, under cared for and on top of it all….those puffy veins!

Penn Medicine's Dr. Ivona Percec says using popular facial treatments like fillers, lasers, light treatments, and chemical peels can turn back the clock on hands

"They become a little bit distended, a little bit fuller and that in conjunction with the loss of fat on the back of the hands tends to give this a more skeletal appearance," Perec said. "None of them is the perfect treatment and they typically have to be used in combination of each other."

Nicole gets filler injections to plump up the back of her hands and stimulate her own collagen growth.

"The risks of using filler are bleeding, infection contour abnormalities allergic reaction," Perec said.

That's rare... But she must be careful to avoid veins and tendons and massage it in evenly. Then a gentle chemical peel to smooth and brighten.

Julie gets a different treatment called IPL - intensive pulse light to treat these brown spots. It also tightens the skin just a little bit.

Dr. Percec does not recommend laser light for all skin types and there are limits to improving wrinkly fingers.

Dr Percec stresses reasonable goals can be achieved if the first series of treatments is followed strictly and you take better care to maintain them.

Insurance policies have rules governing what's covered and what's not. Generally, they make sense. The rules are designed to prevent unreasonable costs from being passed along to the insurer, and by extension to other insurance customers. But listen to Sheree Kober's story.
