Tanker truck spills oil, explodes on Long Island

NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) - Thousands of gallons of fuel spilled onto the Sunrise Highway on Long Island after a tanker truck was rear-ended and overturned injuring the drivers.

The truck flipped onto its side and exploded at about 11:15 p.m. on Tuesday in Bellmore, said police.

Twelve vehicles and three homes were damaged.

The fire was brought under control early Wednesday. At one point the flames were 20 feet high.

Seven-thousand gallons of oil leaked onto the roadway.

A major cleanup effort was underway Wednesday.

The Sunrise Highway remains closed near Newbridge Road.

The drivers suffered minor injuries.
