Detroit police gets local help spreading holiday cheer to Detroit families

(WJBK) -

The recent police raids are getting criminals off the streets and are getting a lot of attention. The raids are inspiring people to step up and support the police department's work in the community.

"And as I saw the raid, I said 'Wow, this is something that I could do,'" says Todd Penn. His office inside the UAW Chrysler buildings is just steps away from the Martin Luther King homes, a community that had become known for drug dealing and prostitution. Detroit police swept through this complex just weeks ago and arrested 42 people. It's one of the high-profile raids Chief Craig says are designed to clean up Detroit's neighborhoods. He says the hard work of Detroit's finest is already making an impact.

"We're talking about 67 fewer homicides; 88 fewer shootings - that's phenomenal," Chief Craig says.

"If I didn't believe it in I wouldn't put myself out there to help him," says Penn.

Penn and his plant safety managers, together, raised four thousand dollars. Their plan is to give eight families gift cards worth five hundred dollars this Christmas, and two of those families live in the King homes. UAW Chrysler is just one of a number of companies and nonprofits that have stepped up to help Detroit police bring a little holiday cheer to this community Thursday in an effort to show families that they're not only being protected, but also supported. For a second day in a row the Skillman Foundation hosted an early Christmas for DPD.

"They work so hard for us every single day. And we just believe that, as a community, we need to celebrate these local heroes," says Tonya Allen of the Skillman Foundation.

"It just shows that the community appreciates the work that the Detroit Police Department [does] every day," says Chief Craig.
