Chicago `Superjock` radio legend Larry Lujack dies at 73

CHICAGO (FOX 32 News) -

Chicagoans remember a legend Thursday morning, following the death of WLS' Larry Lujack. The radio pioneer lost his battle with esophageal cancer in New Mexico on Wednesday.

Lujack was a radio celebrity who pioneered what would later be known as "shock jock" radio. He was best known for his dark - but funny - animal stories, and of course, his sidekick Little Tommy – Tommy Edwards.

Edwards joined Good Day Chicago Thursday morning to reminisce about his time working with Lujack, and shared great memories with FOX 32's Corey McPherrin.

Edwards said Lujack was an inspiration to so many radio and television people who grew up listening to him, because he was never anyone but himself, and that's what made him great.

"You can be successful just by being yourself. That's exactly what Larry was – this was never an act. He was exactly the way he was - when he and I were out at a restaurant or out doing something – when he was on the radio. I think that's one of the things that attracted me to him," Edwards told Good Day. "You knew what you got with Larry."

Lujack worked for Rock and Roll stations in Chicago from the 1960's to 1987.

His wife says her husband went into hospice care three days before his death. Lujakc was 73 years old.

FOX 32's Facebook fans posted their memories of "Uncle Lar" Thursday morning.

"Uncle Lar and Little Tommy...my high school years of waking up to WLS...we are talking the 70's when music was the best!!!" Carrie wrote.

"I grew up with the sound of his voice, and the music from the 70's," VIv said. "May he rest in peace."

"Proof that radio is a powerful force in people's lives," Michael wrote, in part. He remembered listening to Lujack's "animal stories and Little Tommy on the way to Children's Memorial Hospital for treatment with my mother."
