Highland Park sued over assault weapons ban

Posted: Updated:

CHICAGO (AP) - A Chicago suburb that rushed to pass an assault weapons ban ahead of a new state law allowing concealed carry will now have to defend the ban after a resident filed a lawsuit.

Arie Friedman argues in his lawsuit against Highland Park that he owns semi-automatic firearms and ammunition magazines for lawful purposes such as target shooting and defense of his home and family. He argues the ban infringes on his Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms.

Court records show the lawsuit filed in Lake County Circuit court was moved to federal court this week. In court documents, the community says it should be moved because the only issue is the constitutionality of the ban.
