Family builds tradition with Christmas puzzles

Posted: Updated:

What started as just Christmas gifts many years ago has become a Christmas tradition for one Arlington family.

Randy Hamilton said when his four sons were younger he and his wife bought them each a 'Twas the Night before Christmas puzzle.

"Putting them together we found out that we weren't going to make it if we didn't chose a night, turn off the TV, turn off the radio and have just a good old family night together and work on the puzzles," he said.

Because his sons liked the fact that they got to stay up late that night, the family started the tradition of doing it every year. The family now has about 135 Christmas-themed puzzles hanging up around the house.

"I look at them and it reminds me of a Christmas with my little boys and the love of a family together and having fun," Randy Hamilton said.

The Hamilton boys are all grown up and have their own families. Their families have started the puzzle tradition, too.

The three oldest work together as children's dentists.

"Over the years doing that we grew very close and that definitely has contributed to us wanting to work together," said Ross Hamilton.

Some of their puzzles hang on the walls at their office.

"All the boys, we'll walk by and see one and they'll walk and see one and they'll remember something that happened about that year and get tickled or say, 'Dad, that's the year I hid the last piece so I could put it in,'" Randy Hamilton said. "I think it helped bond us all real well together because it was a wonderful tradition."

Some friends and patients have since picked up the tradition, the Hamiltons said.
