The Suffolk County SPCA is offering a reward in connection with the dumping of a small dog into a commercial trash bin overnight on Long Island.

The female dog, believed to be a Lhasa apso, was found in a trash bin behind a gas station on Montauk Highway in West Islip at about 2:10 a.m. Tuesday. She was wearing a pink collar and leash. Inside the bin was a plastic garbage bag containing a cardboard pet carrier, SPCA Chief Roy Gross said. He believes the dog chewed its way out of the container and bag but then found itself stuck in the trash bin.

Officers from the Suffolk County police and SPCA rescued the dog and brought her to an animal hospital. Her fur was matted and dirty, but she is expected to be OK.

An SPCA detective examined security camera footage from the gas station. The footage shows a black SUV pulling up to the bin at about 7:45 a.m. Monday, a man getting out, and then throwing a black garbage bag into the bin, Chief Gross said. That means the dog was in the trash for more than 18 hours and probably didn't make a sound.

"It's a one in a million chance" that the dog was found and is alive, Gross said. The dog, about a year and a half old, is now at a shelter and will be put up for adoption.

Chief Gross said the dog is very sweet and mellow. "How anybody could do something like this is unbelievable," he said. "It's a miracle" the story ends well.

Based on the video, the SPCA has a person of interest in the case. But if you have any information about who dumped the dog in the bin, you can call Suffolk County SPCA at 631-382-7722. The agency is offering a $2,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest and conviction.
