HOMELESS HOLIDAY: Shelters prepare meals, beds for thousands

Posted: Updated:
MINNEAPOLIS (KMSP) -

This Christmas Eve, homeless shelters across the metro began preparing beds and special meals for the thousands of men and women who don't have a home to call their own for the holidays.

The frigid air has created a significant need in recent days, with dangerous subzero temperatures and wind-chills dipping as low as -30. Thankfully, although the need is great, there are also a lot of great people who are volunteering to help.

FACT: In Hennepin County alone, there are about 2,500 homeless people. Of those, 1,000 are children.

Steve Horsfield, executive director of Simpson Housing in the Whittier, joined Fox 9 News to discuss how his shelter is preparing to host for the holiday, where they have 66 beds for men who stay for 28 days as they transition to other housing.

Horsfield said several former guests are returning to help serve a traditional turkey dinner on Christmas Eve. Breakfast will also be provided at a nearby restaurant on Christmas morning, and the nightly shelter will remain open to offer a warm haven for Christmas Day before a special meal is served.

The Salvation Army's shelter is also planning to house about 800. While they usually can shelter about 450 people, they are now moving chairs and bringing in extra mats to accommodate more.
