Spitzers say their marriage is over

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

Just a day after a report claimed Eliot Spitzer was dating a former aide who now works for Mayor-elect Bill de Blasio, the former governor and his wife say their marriage is over.

Spitzer, 54, and Silda Wall Spitzer, 55, said in a statement: "We regret that our marital relationship has come to an end and we have agreed not to make any other public statement on this subject."

Earlier this year, Eliot Spitzer ran for city comptroller. Wall Spitzer was nowhere to be seen on the campaign trail.

The New York Post reported that Spitzer is now seeing Lis Smith, 31, currently a spokeswoman for de Blasio's transition team and formerly an aide to Spitzer's campaign.

In 2008, Spitzer admitted to sleeping with prostitutes and resigned from office just 14 months into his term. His wife famously stood by his side when he made the embarrassing admission.

But the Spitzers have been reportedly living apart for some time.
