Georgia lake rises to flood stage after heavy rain

Posted: Updated:

GAINESVILLE, Ga. (AP) - The Army Corps of Engineers says heavy rainfall from over the weekend has brought Lake Lanier to flood stage.

Army Corps of Engineers spokesman Patrick Robbins told the Gainesville Times officials will try redistributing extra water to get the lake back to 1,070 feet above sea level. The lake is about 3 feet over its typical winter water level, which has led to the closure of some park locations and boat ramps.

Lake Lanier Assistant Operations Project Manager, Chris Lovelady, says some boat ramps are mostly submerged because of the extra water.

Robbins says the extra water is being released downstream at the Buford Dam. He says officials are monitoring conditions there to ensure that the release of the extra water doesn't lead to flooding elsewhere.
