Eagles Playoff Means Big Payoff for City

Posted: Updated:

The Eagles first post season appearance in 3 years was more than just a win for the guys in green. It also translates into millions of dollars in financial windfall for area businesses.

"It's going to be a mad house. It's going to be crazy" said Tony Luke III, of Tony Luke's Cheesesteaks on Oregon Avenue.

The South Philly institution is already stocking up on extra rolls, steak and pork for Saturday night's game against the New Orleans Saints.

The more football is played, the more steaks they sell.

"It's great for us. Everybody loves to eat they love cheesesteaks, so they are coming down they want to see the Eagles win and it really works out well for us" said Luke III.

The Philadelphia Sports Congress estimates that a single playoff game means a $10 million economic payoff to the city.  Local and regional spending on 65,000 tickets, parking, concessions, hotels and restaurants is a big economic boost.

"Business is good, the excitement is good" said Mike Shawaryn of Modell's Sporting Goods.

The South Philadelphia Modell's was busy with customer grabbing up anything Eagles. The biggest seller the newly minted NFC Division Championship t-shirts selling for $28.99.  Jersey's and hats were also a big sellers. Eagles fan Jeremy Goode of South Philadelphia stopped in to buy a LeSean McCoy jersey for Saturday night's game.

"I've been a diehard ever since I was a little boy. And I just wanted to show my support" said Goode.

Some fans couldn't even wait for the store to open. A handful of customers were waiting at the front door. Something that hasn't happened in years.

"They're coming in. When you are open they're right in here. They are looking for the Eagles green and they're just excited to buy and excited to see the new merchandise" said Shawaryn.

And what about playoff tickets? They are available for a hefty price tag. On the after-market ticket website StubHub, Eagles tickets were going for $167 for standing room only ticket to more than $2700 for a second row seat on the 50 yard line.

The Eagles announced it would begin selling "a couple thousand" tickets starting at noon Tuesday.  You can only get them by going to www.ticketmaster.com or calling 1-800-745-3000

Some fans like Nancy Nayowith from Queen Village who says the playoff win brought something else to the city.

"There is an amazing sense of comrade everybody wants to be part of it. People smile a little more easily they have something to talk about with someone they don't even know.. it's just a much warmer feeling in the city" Nayowith said.

The Eagles kick off against the Saints at Lincoln Financial Field on Saturday night at 8:10pm.
