Cedar Hill's mayor said his stepson was on drugs the night he was shot and killed by a homeowner while allegedly trying to break in to a house.
"We get the knock on the door. Police chief, assistant city manager, city manager... my wife knew immediately something bad had happened," Mayor Rob Franke told FOX4.
Josh Slaven, 31, was at his dad's house for Christmas Eve dinner just hours before the shooting happened.
"His language got out of line a couple of times so we asked him to leave," said Franke.
Slaven then asked his father to call police. Franke placed the call and Slaven waited on the front porch for police to arrive. By the time police showed up, Slaven had wandered away. Officers searched the woods near the home, but couldn't find Slaven.
Franke said he doesn't know why Slaven went the neighbor's home, which is about a mile away from Franke's house. Slaven was shot dead while allegedly breaking in to the house.
"Josh made bad decisions, and yes, Josh suffered the consequences," Franke said.
Franke said Slaven had struggled with drugs since he was a teenager and they knew that night he was using.
"He used multiple drugs, he gotten to a point he was on heroin," Franke said.
Franke hopes by talking publicly about his stepson's drug addiction he might help other families.
The attorney for Gareth Long, the home owner who shot Slaven, said Long is still distraught about what happened Christmas Eve, but respects the mayor's handling of the situation.
