Location of phones stolen from North Dallas store tracked, but store says police can't help

Posted: Updated:

A North Dallas cell phone store was burglarized Monday night, where thieves took about $5,000 worth of iPads and cell phones. Store officials have since been able to track the location of the stolen phones via GPS to an apartment complex, but police can't help, leaving the store's regional manager frustrated and without a way to get the merchandise back.

Security cameras caught the thieves in action at a Sprint by United Cellular store, where at least six of them can be seen running through the store and grabbing the phones and iPads. They reportedly broke in by smashing a glass panel with a large rock.

"We're being told [police] can't do anything without a search warrant," said Michelle Wilder, the regional manager.

Wilder says three of the devices she's tracked are at an apartment complex that's less than 10 miles away from the store.

"Obviously, it's going to affect our business in a negative way because we can't sell a phone because you can't see it," said Wilder.

Unfortunately, she and store officials can only sit and watch their merchandise move around the Metroplex.

"It's very frustrating, because we'd love to obviously get a group of us together and knock on their door and say, ‘Hey, guess what? Busted!'" said Wilder.

All of the stolen devices had been sitting out on display attached to a wire claw. One is left.
