7 things pet owners need to know during a snow storm

Posted: Updated:
NEW YORK (MYFOXNY) -

When the temperatures drop, the wind kicks up, and the snow blankets your community, you should remember to take steps to keep your pets safe and healthy in addition to all other preparations for you and your family. The ASPCA has a list of tips for pet owners:

1. Don't let your dog off the leash on snow or ice, especially during a snowstorm, because dogs can lose their scent and become lost.

2. Don't leave your dog outside during a snowstorm for any longer than you want to be outside, because if it's too cold for you, it's too cold for them.

3. Completely wipe off your dog's legs and belly when you come inside from a snow storm so he or she doesn't lick and ingest ingest salt, antifreeze, or anything else toxic.

4. Consider getting a coat or sweater for short-haired dogs.

5. Don't ever leave a dog or cat alone in a car.

6. Never shave your dog down to the skin in winter; a full coat provides warmth.

7. Make sure your pet has a warm place to sleep; off the floor and away from all drafts.
