Mother of Kirkwood murder victim confronts suspect

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

A mother confronted a man accused in her son's murder on Thursday.

Qutravious Palmer, 22, was making his court appearance in the murder of 21-year-old Xavier Arnold when the confrontation happened.

Arnold, an Army reservist, was shot and killed on a bike path in Atlanta's Kirkwood community on the day after Christmas. Palmer surrendered to authorities on Wednesday. A 14-year-old is also charged in the case. The teenager is the suspected gunman.

Arnold's mother, Nichole Villafane, had words for the suspect outside the courtroom.

"I'm the mother who sat there and you told that 14-year-old to shoot my son in the head," Villafane said.  "Now that you sat and thought about it, was it worth it? Was it worth it?"

Palmer appeared to shake his head no and said something that was inaudible.

Two friends who were with Arnold at the time of the shooting were also at the hearing. One man was shot in the leg, while a woman was pushed by the suspects but was otherwise unharmed.  They declined to be interviewed.

The Kirkwood community also turned out, with residents wearing t-shirts in support of the family.  Afterwards, Xavier's mother explained why she confronted Palmer.

"I wanted him to see the hurt in my eyes," she said.

Palmer will be back in court on Jan. 21.
