Girl rescued from well expected to recover

Posted: Updated:

Doctors say a 7-year-old girl rescued after falling into a 50-foot well is expected to make a full recovery.

Megan Winters fell feet-first into a Whitesburg well at her grandmother's home on Monday.

It took Carroll County rescuers more than an hour to free the 7-year-old. Ropes and pulleys tied to trees brought a man down into the well to pull Megan up.

Megan was transported to Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston with numerous injuries including broken legs, a broken arm and hip as well as multiple fractures to her face.  Her eyes are swollen shut. Her family says that her spirits remains unbroken by all that has happened to her.

Winters is expected to spend some time recovering at Children's Healthcare of Atlanta at Egleston before being transferred to another facility.

Officials said there had been a protective covering on that well, but it was apparently stolen.
