Department of Public Safety officials are searching for a man accused of assaulting a highway patrol officer.

This happened around 2:45 a.m. on January 1st on the U.S. 60 near Extension Road.

25-year-old Rafael Reyna, III was stopped by an officer and was about to be taken into custody for suspicion of driving under the influence.  That's when authorities say Reyna turned around and hit the officer in the face -- repeatedly.

Reyna then fled the scene in a vehicle with only one handcuff still on his left wrist.

The vehicle Reyna was driving has since been recovered.

According to DPS, Reyna is a convicted felon and has a history of violence towards law enforcement. He's described as 5' 7" tall, 200 pounds with black hair and brown eyes. He has numerous tattoos.

The United States Marshal Service, Silent Witness, Fraternal Order of Police and the Arizona Highway Patrol Association are offering a reward of at least $10,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of Rafael Reyna.

The DPS officer was hospitalized and is recovering from his injuries.

If you have any information about Reyna's whereabouts, contact DPS at (602) 223-2212 or Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS.
