CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - Defense lawyers in a mob trial opening this week in federal court in New Jersey expect to argue that it's not a mob trial at all.

Government prosecutors say seven men conspired to take over a Texas-based mortgage company, use it to buy shell companies and keep the proceeds for themselves and for the Lucchese crime family.

Nicodemo S. Scarfo is among those charged. He is the son of imprisoned Philadelphia and southern New Jersey crime family boss Nicodemo "Little Nicky" Scarfo.

The younger Scarfo's lawyer says his client had little to do with the financial dealings in the allegations.

Six original defendants in the case have pleaded guilty. One of them is expected to testify for the government in a trial that could take three months. It starts Wednesday.

For decades, making some quick cash was the main drive behind so many who took the ride down the parkway to Atlantic City. But with so much to choose from nowadays, it looks like Atlantic City is in a lot of trouble.
